Runescape Pure Question?

What should I level as normal attack skill, or should I just be a melee base pker? My spec wep is granite maul. I know that ancients is good, but it also requires you to have a lot more done (other quests and skill requirements) so if i end up leveling those other skills won't that affect my special weapon damage?
