How will a boxed brown dye affect my brown roots on over bleached hair?

While traveling over past 7 months, I had the misfortune to visit 3 different salons to get my highlights touched up. Each place I left only managed to further "blonde" me. And the next day when I looked in the mirror, it looked like I NEEDED MY ROOTS DONE! ! I now have clic trailer trash look -- the damaged straw with dark brown roots. A stylist told me that my bleached hair will not hold brown low lights. Will a boxed do-it-yourself to cover up gray hair help me achieve a "brown down"; darken the damaged hair without looking (more) ridiculous?
