Used to be that "It's a Wonderful Life" was shown everyday on every channel...?

Republic Pictures, the company that produced "It's a Wonderful Life" neglected to renew it's copyright of this holiday favorite. Consequently, it became public domain and was shown over and over because TV stations could show it without paying a royalty. About ten years ago, that changed and now it is shown only once a year on NBC. What happened?
